Specification
General Description
McIntyre PORCELAIN AND STONEWARE TILES are formed from wet clay, hand finished and hand glazed and single fired to 2400 degrees F. Each tile has a flat back and cushioned edge. Custom tiles may be produced at other temperatures and with other processes.
Standard Specifications
McIntyre Tile conforms to ANSI 137.1 as Special Purpose Tile. Our tiles are produced, graded and packed to our stated specifications. When requested by the purchaser prior to production, a Master Grade Certificate may be issued certifying compliance with properties mutually agreed upon by purchaser and McIntyre Tile. Generally, a Master Grade Certificate should be requested when the tile is specified for a commercial floor or any exterior use.
How to Specify
Glazed, high fired ___________________ (specify Porcelain or Stoneware) tile in actual size __________________ (specify actual size) and color___________________ (specify glaze name) as manufactured by McIntyre Tile Company, Healdsburg, California. Tile shall have a flat back, a cushioned edge, and shall be fully vitrified (absorption less than 3%). Tile shall conform to ANSI 137.1 as Special Purpose Tile. Allow 4-6 weeks from time of purchase order to delivery. Sales Terms are 50% down with order, balance COD.
Availability
These tiles are made to order and therefore subject to production limitations and order volume fluctuations. For purposes of specification, a lead time of 4-6 weeks is sufficient in most cases. Check with the factory or your local distributor for verification of delivery.
Color Variation
Most McIntyre glaze colors vary from tile to tile, some more than others. These variations are intentional, resulting from our particular production methods and our choice of raw materials. When specifying a McIntyre glaze, always work from a sampling of 3 or more tiles which represent the range of color you can expect on the job.
Murals
McIntyre murals should be laid out prior to installation to verify the spacing and fit. The tiles surrounding the mural should be carefully chosen to blend with those in the mural itself. Install murals at the same time as surrounding tiles to assure correct fit.
Slip Resistance
If specified when ordered, McIntyre will add an abrasive grit to any glazed tile for use on floors. The grit is either white (pure silica) or black (nickel alloy). The abrasives are most commonly used on shower floors and commercial floor applications.
Crazing
Crazing refers to the hair-line cracks which occur in the glaze surface of some tiles. Certain glazes produced by McIntyre Tile are intentionally crazed for decorative effect. To minimize the possibility for staining, the factory recommends the use of natural gray grout. Penetrating sealers or grout releases may also be used per the manufacturer’s instructions. To highlight the crazing, colored stains may be rubbed into the surface before sealing.
Size Variation
Because of the substantial shrinkage from wet to fired in the manufacturing, McIntyre tiles are subject to size variation. Dimensions on 6x6 and smaller tiles may vary up to 1/16" from the actual size specified, on 8x8 tile to 3/32" and on 12x12 tile to 1/8". Tile thickness may vary 1/32" from the dimensions specified. Deflection on 12x12 tiles is limited to 1/8" from a straight edge.
Custom Color Development
We specialize in custom color development. Generally, we can match the hue and sheen of a sample submitted. For a fixed development fee, we will conduct a series of glaze tests and make a prototype tile for submittal. Custom glazed tiles made for a job are surcharged 20%. Please allow 2-4 weeks for development time in our glaze lab.
Installation
Installation procedures should conform to the Tile Council of America "Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation" (current edition). The layout should be evenly spaced on each surface and maximize the use of full tiles. Grout joints should align. Avoid grouping tiles of the same hue or value. Choose stacks of tiles from several different cartons to achieve the best overall blend of color.
Grout Space
McIntyre is sized modular with a square foot space allowing a 1/4" grout throughout. A narrower grout spacing can be used including "tight", however, additional tiles will be required to cover a given area. Close grout spaces accentuate tile irregularities.
Frost Proof
McIntyre Tile has a water absorption of less than 3% (vitreous) and is suitable for use in pools and spas for both interior and exterior applications.
Colored Grouts vs. Natural Gray
The factory recommends natural gray grout for all of its glazes to minimize staining from colored grout pigments. Caution is especially recommended with matte glazes. Test a loose piece of tile before grouting your installation. To reduce staining, use a Grout Release before grouting (except with Copper Flash glaze). Always test before using. Do not apply any materials to your tile without first satisfying yourself by testing, that the result will be satisfactory.
Maintenance
Minimal maintenance is required. Mild soaps should be sufficient for most cleaning. For persistent stains, stronger cleaners (even mild acids) may be used on the tile (except for Metallic glazes), but care must be taken to avoid contact with the grout, especially if a colored grout has been used. Test any cleaners before general use.
Durability Considerations
Depending on specific site conditions, all glazed tile are subject to wear over time. To determine the suitability for specific applications, each McIntyre glaze has been tested and ranked on the MOHS scale and classified according to hardness and recommended use. Light colors and matte glazes are a better choice in heavy use areas rather than dark colors and gloss finished glazes because scratches on the tile surface are less apparent. A means must be provided for people to clean abrasive materials off their shoes before walking on a glazed tile floor.
High-Fired Metallic Glazes
These tiles feature metal molecules embedded on the glaze surface for a sensational metal effect. The glazes are non-toxic in both manufacture and usage. The glaze surfaces are sensitive to oxidation and must be protected. It is pre-sealed at the factory. Periodically the sealer must be renewed to protect the metallic quality. These glazes are NOT suitable for areas where abrasion, water and/or strong chemicals are present. Pre-test any sealers or grout releases before general use. Some products will discolor the glaze/metal surface. McIntyre Tile will not be responsible for discoloration to this tile from chemicals or moisture.
